Charity polo match in St Albans attracts hundreds of visitors

HUNDREDS of people showed their support for Britain's armed forces during an afternoon of polo, just outside of St Albans.

On Saturday, July 23, the second annual Polo for Heroes event was held at St Albans Polo Club, in Chiswell Green Lane, Chiswell Green, which owned by former world middleweight boxing champion Steve Collins.

The all-day event raises money for Help for Heroes and organiser Clare Dingwall said this year’s match was attended by a number of soldiers who had been injured during conflict.

She said: “It was fantastic day, at least 500 people attended and we had about 260 people in the VIP area.”

The final total of money raised on the day is still to be confirmed, however Clare said they are hopeful last year’s £18,000 will be exceeded.

Polo for Heroes was launched last year and was the idea of celebrity chef Tristan Welch, best known for his appearances on BBC’s Saturday Kitchen, and polo fanatic Clare Dingwall and members of St Albans Polo Club.

The money raised in 2010 was presented to Falklands veteran Simon Weston who became an eloquent spokesman for services charities and causes after suffering terrible disfigurement in the 1982 Falklands War.
